Back like we neva left. March, lets go…
Giving love to 4 albums this week.. starting off with March 2nd, 1993.. the V-Town legend B-Legit, dropped “Tryin’ to Get a Buck”. This was his 1st album, which included his bro E-40, Little Bruce, Levitti and Mac Shawn. Classics include “Dank Room” and “Way Too Vicious” with E-40.
March 1st. 1994 the Oakland Giant, MC Hammer released his 5th album. 5 albums by 1994, thats saying something. This album made waves before it even came out, as Hammer dropped the video and single for “Pumps and a Bump” on the Arsenio Hall Show. So many folks from the Bay were in that pool scene, i knew a couple of the pumps with bumps… and Hammer himself donned a speedo. MTV and their counterparts deemed the video explicit because they had a Black Man in a speedo, and parts of the video were reshot with Hammer fully clothed. This video was shot at Hammers house in the hills of Fremont, he doesn’t own that house anymore, but you can still see it off the 680 fwy.
March 5th 1996. Female Bosses from the Bay, the Conscious Daughters released their 2nd album, “Gamers”. Outta Paris’ The Black Panther of Hip Hop’s camp, he was a producer on the album, as well as Studio Ton, Mike Mosley. The only charing single was the hit “Gamers”. But Don’t sleep on other cuts, like “All Star Freestyle” that has Mac Mall, MoneyB, Saafir, CFunk, Mystic, Clee, Father Dom and Harm.. all outta the bay.
Last Album this week. Blackalicious, album “NIA”. In swahili Nia means purpose. Members include Chief Xcel, and Rest in Peace to Gift of Gab. A Highly lyrical album, very soulful, with great production and lyrics. Guest appearances, Lyrics Born, Lateef and even Niki Giovanni the pioneering poet! An album favored by critics and fans of lyricism, THE standout cut is Deception. That and more in the mix this week. And as we know, we lost “Gift of Gab” aka Timothy Jerome Parker June 18th 2021. From Sacramento, he was a big contributor to the culture. Stay in tuned, to WSRR, Project Sound and Blax Radio. out!
