WSRR 1.12

2022 keeps rollin on. Not many artists drop new albums in the Month of January, but we got some good cuts this week.

One album that did drop and make waves from the west coast to beyond, was the debut release from DJ Quik, “Quik is the Name”, released Jan 15th, 1991. This album dropped on Profile Records with no fanfare. Up here in the Bay area nobody knew who Quik was, but when i copped the tape and took a listen, i immediately dropped this on Bay Area Radio. “Quik is the Name” was originally a mixtape, but when Profile won the bidding war for DJ Quik, they gave him 30 thou wow to mix the record over. They did the work at Westlake recording studios in santa monica, where Michael Jackson did Thriller. Stand out cuts, the SBP, Born and Raised in Compton, which reached #16 on Billboard,  and Quik is the name.

Also released this week in Hip Hop History, Digital Underground’s “This is an EP Release”. This Ep included 2 songs off of the movie “Nothing But Trouble” which brought us Tupac Shakur on the single Same Song.

Last Up, the soundtrack to Rhyme and Reason. Rhyme and Reason a documentary on Hip Hop, included some Westcoast Heavyweights. So we got cuts from Mack 10, e-40, MC Eiht, Volume 10 and Ras kass in the mix.
