So Prince Paul is socially awkward- like me. I mean we’re both kinda weird but functional. I guess that’s why I grew up liking his quirky, yet funky productions and DJ techniques.
Oh yeah- since its April 2nd let me be the first to wish Prince Paul Hutson a big born day salute!
I was about 11 years old when I first heard his Stetsasonic opus “Talkin’ All That Jazz”. Shortly after I cop’d “3 Ft. High and Rising” for which he is credited as executive producer
and mentor to the young De La Soul crew of Amityville, Long Island, New York. Since then I consciously and unconsciously gravitated to his production catalog and contributions
which stemmed from the first three De La Soul classic albums, to his brain-child Gravediggaz, his own solo albums, and countless song credits for artists like Big Daddy Kane,
Souls of Mischief, Gorillaz, Horror City, Queen Latifah, Slick Rick and more.
I had the opportunity to meet Paul on two occasions out here in California. One time he was headlining with fellow genius Don Newkirk at the “Belly Up Tavern” in Solna Beach
circa 2004. Another occasion was a decade later at “The Crosby” in Santa Ana. I graciously thanked him for his contributions to HipHop history. He modestly appreciated my
words before I threw in a brief ‘y’all gotta do another De La joint!’ Coincidentally that was the same statement I threw out to Posdnuos at “Maritime Hall” in San Francisco 1998!
Feel free to scan Paul’s five decades of work, but if you’re asking me, here’s a brief chronology of my favorite Prince Paul productions.
