The Concept of Black August grew out of the Black Liberation Prison Resistance Movement. Black August is NOT a celebration, but a COMMEMORATION and honoring of the Warriors, Freedom Fighters and Black Liberators who have fought behind the walls against this New Slavery with the Prison Industrial Complex, and within the Afrikan Liberation movements worldwide. The work of George Jackson has been a source of inspiration, and dedication within the work. An author, who worked with the Black Panther Party, George was apart of the Black Liberation Army and was murdered in prison, at the excuse of a prison escape August 21st 1971. Historically many Afrikan Liberation events took place, such as: Haitian Revolution, Nat Turner Rebellion, Watts Uprising, the foundation of the Underground Railroad, the foundation of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, the March on Washington, the born days of Marcus Garvey, Fred Hampton and Maroon Shoatz, the deaths of WEB duBois, and Jonathan Jackson (George’s younger brother who was killed trying to free him).
In honor of Black August 2021, we have compiled a list of music inspired by Afrikan Resistance, Black August, and the Prison Movement. Though there are numerous, powerful cuts on this subject, these are our picks for 2021. This will be in the mix every Saturday of Black August on Black Radio during “Da Struggle Continues Saturday” 3pm pacific/6pm eastern. Look for Black August events in your local, Study the works of George Jackson, and others in the Prison Movement, and Study, Train and Fast. Black August Resistance !!
