Today, as always, we pay homage to Soul Brotha #1/The Godfather of Soul/Mr. Dynamite otherwise known as James Brown! He rose from the deepest of hard times to achieve historic stardom. He started in the Deep South trying to escape poverty. He was imprisoned for a supposed attempted auto theft and eventually ended up performing in jail. As fate would have it, he was discovered and assisted by Bobby Byrd […]
Mr. Louis Daniel “Stachmo” Armstrong may very well be the most influential figure in the history of Black, and therefore, American music (shouts to Scott Joplin). Born August 4th 1901, Louie came up tough in the Battlefield section of Rampart Street in the Crescent City. He mastered his trumpet but customized his presentation with eclectic skat improvisation and later rough, gravely vocals. Americans were lucky to witness Satchmo as he […]
Although we celebrate Black history on a daily, we understand the significance of February. As inspired by Mary Church Terrell, and later Cater G. Woodson, we salute the ancestral pioneers and subsequent contemporaries in Black History. Given this is BlaxRadio, it’s only fitting to begin with The Great Mahalia Jackson. Her beautiful, spiritual presence was amplified by her angelic voice. Here is a favorite along with Mr. Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong.

Spellbound by Joe Sample - !!!! With Jazz especially, words cannot adequately describe or express the creative exchange of vibes. Still, I’ll give it a shot. Joe Sample’s Spellbound is Winter for me, but not cold. It actually provides warmth, comfort, and hope for Baydestrians as we navigate January. It’s a way to stay focused, proud and confident while I anxiously await the Spring thaw. Although Joe is from Houston, […]
